Events have been held all over London, along with the remainder of Britain, to celebrate the fact that there is only one year to go until Britain holds the Olympics!

The Aquatics Centre in Straford was unveiled with the nation’s favourite diver, Tom Daley, making the first ever dive into the pool. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge attended an event in Trafalgar Square, where the design of the medals were presented for the first time. The free event in Trafalgar Square saw Mr. Rogge and the Mayor of London Boris Johnson invite the world to come to London to celebrate the games next summer. There was also the chance to watch pop band The Feeling, as well as gospel choirs, Radio 1 DJ Kissey Sell Out, BMX riding displays and dance acts.

A total of 15,000 athletes from over 200 different countries will compete in the Olympic and Paralympics Games next summer, and preparations are on track to ensure London 2012 is one of the most spectacular events ever.

The end of the games next year will close a decade long-project, after London won the bid in 2005, stating that the games would encourage young people to be athletes and the event would be a catalyst for a lasting positive economic change.

Ironbridge is lit in London 2012, brand new colours for the launch of the Cultural Olympiad, showcasing the West Midlands support towards the London 2012 Olympics, since the West Midlands vision is to raise the profile of the region and deliver an Olympic moment for everyone in the West Midlands. Through the promotions and support of the 2012 Olympics, the West Midlands are hoping to showcase their businesses and capabilities to the world. London 2012 provides a much needed vehicle to promote and create participation in sport in the West Midlands, which is extremely needed, given that the UK is one of the unhealthiest nations in Europe. Within the UK, the West Midlands has the highest percentage of obese adults at 29% – double the EU average of 14% and much higher than the 19% rate seen in Greater London.

The London 2012 is not only hopefully going to improve county’s lifestyle, it is also hopefully going to unite nations across the world in one place, with different ethnics and cultures coming together for their love of sport!
