West Bromwich Albion
It’s been a mixed season for West Brom. They began by getting thumped 6-0 by Chelsea in their first game. Which meant that the club had to take action by signing Somen Tchoyi and Peter Odemwingie. Peter Odemwingie made an immediate impact in the next game against Sunderland by scoring the winner. That was not the only fantastic result for the Baggies as they went on winning plenty more including a 3-2 win at Arsenal and a great result coming from 2-0 down at half time to draw 2-2 at Manchester United. Midway through the season Odemwingie was on 9 goals and on fire. Then it all went wrong as they slowly slipped down the table losing 13 games out of 18 in all competitions. They were then in big trouble just above the relegation zone. The club thought it was the right time to take action, which lead to the sacking of the manager Roberto Di Matteo. Which I believe to be a big mistake and I think it now makes them even more likely to go down. The only positive out of the last few months was the loan signing of the Mexican star Carlos Vela. Vela is a big addition to the team and has improved the team in recent weeks. Now Di Matteo is gone, Roy Hodgson has got the position of head coach which I think is a great appointment because he is experienced and did a great job at Fulham. But does he have enough time to stamp his own ideas on the team to save them?
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolves aren’t in the best of positions as they sit bottom in the relegation zone. Their season has been full of ups and downs as they seem to beat the difficult teams like Manchester United and Chelsea, but struggle against teams around them like Wigan. The signing of Jamie O’Hara from Tottenham on loan was a big boost for them as they have been lacking in that centre midfield position. Saturday 5th February was a great day for Wolves as they beat Manchester United, and they are the first team to do it this season. Kevin Doyle had a fantastic game for Wolves, which could turn his season around because he hasn’t been playing very well in recent games. Wolves have West Brom on Sunday which should be very exciting, they will be expecting to win it as West Brom aren’t playing very well lately but Wolves should know that West Brom won’t go down without a fight, especially because it’s a derby. Will Wolves pull off a great escape and stay up or will they go down and have to start all over again?
Aston Villa
Aston Villa for their expectations have not had a very good season at all. At the start of the season they were aiming for the Europa League spot but are now near the relegation zone. The arrival of Gerard Houllier as the new manager lead to arguments and John Carew then wanted to leave the club because of the manager. At one point the captain Richard Dunne walked off the training pitch and asked the team to follow him. Many of the team’s key players haven’t really seemed interested including players like Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young. Recently things have picked up for the club mainly due to the 28 million pound signing of Darren Bent. Villa have been lacking a goal scorer but now Bent has signed things are looking up for them. Villa have some very good upcoming stars like Marc Albrighton and Barry Bannan who will most likely one day play for England. Gerard Houllier has not really had a good time as manager of Villa and many Villa fans would agree with me. As in the past when Villa have lost the fans they have sung “You’re getting sacked in the morning!” With the players Villa have for them to go down would be unthinkable. Villa must think about staying up and next season get more players in then aim for the Europa league spot.
Birmingham City
Birmingham haven’t had a good season as they are struggling just above West Brom near the bottom, but things do seem to be improving as they got a fantastic victory over West Ham which moved them out of the relegation zone. Birmingham’s biggest trouble this season has been scoring, they have struggled to score all season and have relied on the defence a bit too much at times. But that could all change due to the signing of Obafemi Martins, a great goal scorer who used to play for Newcastle. Martins has signed on loan and could help keep Birmingham up if he scores the goals that he did a couple of years ago for Newcastle. Even though Martins has signed, Zigic has began to score and scored the winner against West Ham and Stoke. The Manager will have to make a decision on whether to play Martins or Zigic, or maybe both.
