It is set to be a great year for music with the return of some pop megastars and the breakthrough of some incredible acts. We have already had the BRIT awards which saw amazing performances from the likes of Adele and Plan B, and one big winner of the night was recognition for the peoples choice breakthrough act for Jessie J. So i’m going to look at some of the up and coming acts to look out for in 2011, and those who I expect to make a great comeback.

Jessie J

Jessie J

Jessica Cornish is a singer and songwriter who is better known by her stage name Jessie J. She signed a record deal with Island Records and began working on her debut album ‘Who You Are. She has written tracks for Justin Timberlake, Alica Keys, Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus. She won the BBC Sound of 2011 and won the British Critics’ Choice Award at this year’s BRITs.

She attended Colins Performing Arts. She was cast as an 11 year-old in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End production of Whistle Down the Wind. At the age of 16, she began studying at the BRIT school, and joined a girl group at the age of 17, called ‘Soul Deep’.

She began to record her album 6 years ago, and was completed in January 2011. In late 2010, she released ‘Do It Like A Dude’. Her second single ‘Price Tag’ was released in January 2011. The song went straight to the top of the charts charing at number one. It remained at number one for 2 weeks.

She released her debut album, ‘Who You Are’ on 25th February 2011. Due to high demand and interest from fans for the album, the release date was moved forward by a month , from its orginial release of March 28th 2011. Her album charted at number two on the UK Album Charts, being kept off top spot by Adele.

In 2011, Britney has returned with her seventh studio album ‘Femme Fatale’. It is scheduled for release on 29th March 2011. The lead single from the album is ‘Hold It Against Me’. She has changed her image and is back to her best. She has made an appearance on Glee. The second single ‘Till The World Ends’ was released on 4th March 2011. She has had some troubles over the years, but it looks as though she is over them now and seems to have come back stronger. She is going to tour this summer to support the new album. The announcement shows that Britney is back to her best both personally and professionally after a while out of the spotlight. The 2009 release and tour followed a dark period, following her marriage and her problems.

R.E.M

REM

R.E.M are an alternative rock band known for songs such as ‘Losing My Religion’, ‘Shiny Happy People’ and ‘Everybody Hurts’. R.E.M are releasing their fifteenth studio album ‘Collaspe In To Now’, scheduled to be released on 7th March 2011 in Europe. The album is produced by Jacknife Lee and R.E.M. The album will feature guest apperances by Patti Smith, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Peaches, Lenny Kay and Joel Gibb.

I have heard ‘Uberlin’, one of the tracks from their new and upcoming album ‘Collaspe In To Now’. I was impressed with it. In my opinion, it was great.

Lady GaGa

As you will remember from my article ‘The many faces of Lady GaGa’, she is back with ‘Born This Way’, the lead single from her second studio album of the same name. The single has already been released and has made no.3. The album ‘Born This Way’ is released in May 2011. She is mainly known for her second single ‘Poker Face’.  Her forthcoming album will not feature any collaborations as she does not think she can top her collaboration with Beyonce for ‘Telephone’. Meanwhile, Gaga’s debut album ‘The Fame’ has become the UK most downloaded album ever. According to the Official Charts Company, the 2008 album has sold over 300,000 copies to date.

Furthermore, she is putting the finished touches to her next LP, featuring the title track ‘Born This Way’ and her next single, a song called ‘Judas’, ready for release on 23rd May.
